Precision on the rails: GL track measurement & SKH rail head height measurement

An efficient and reliable rail network is crucial for the smooth operation of rail traffic. In this article, we take a look at the fascinating world of Deutzer track measurements, a sophisticated technology that helps to ensure the safety and efficiency of rail transportation.

Track measurement in detail

Track measurement is a comprehensive process that goes far beyond simply monitoring the track position and gauge. The integration of our track measurement system considerably expands the range of data recorded. This includes aspects such as groove depth, rail head height, actual contour of the rails (wear), horizontal wear on the leading and running flanks, vertical wear, twisting, track cant, torsion, course angle, ramps, longitudinal height, arrow height, curve radius, impacts between wheel and rail, smooth running of the axle on the tracks (track pumping), position on the track (GPS coordinates and distance) and speed. Corrugation and noise levels can also be recorded as an option.

Precision in data acquisition

The measurement system is installed on a regular service vehicle of the respective transport company and records the measurement data at regular speeds of up to 60 km/h. A data set is recorded at least every 25 cm, which can also be recorded at much shorter intervals. The measurement results are dynamic and reflect the conditions of regular passenger operations. With the latest generation of DTK track laser scanners, data record distances of less than 2 cm can even be achieved at speeds of over 30 km/h.

Comparison and evaluation of the results from the track measurement train

During the measurement run, the measurement data can be displayed on monitors in order to gain an initial impression of the track geometry. After a second measurement, the measurement campaigns can be compared with each other to determine changes in the track geometry or contours. The convenient DTK evaluation software allows the determination of all over- and underruns of the measured values as well as the display and comparison of the actual contour of the rails with the target contour for any track position.

Integration of SKH rail head height measurement

The video films, which are recorded synchronously with the measurement data, support the assessment of problem areas. With the optional DTK-Explorer, the recorded coordinates can be used for the measured values to enable convenient evaluation and map display as well as offering many export functions for further use of the data.

The DTK measuring system for track measurement is therefore used to record and check the condition of track systems in order to determine rail wear, assess the overall condition and initiate suitable measures or plan for the long term.

Track measurement data can also be recorded as an option:

  • Corrugation on the track
  • Wheel-rail interaction
  • Switches
  • Lower clearance
  • Platform edge measurement
  • 3.Rail measurement
